After their worst season in five years, 13-16 in 1987, Dale Burns' Vikings returned a young but experienced team with only three seniors. Junior Brandon Walters (6-2), the main inside threat, led at 14.4 points and 10 rebounds, and 6-4 junior Mike Elliott, the top all-around threat at 13.4, was nursing a broken toe. Garth Reynolds (6-3, sr., 8), Gary Morton (6-2, soph., 6.9) and 5-6 junior Tommy McDaniel were the likely starters, with Arkansas transfer Jonical Craig, a 17-point scorer the year before, Brad Dunn and Garland Chafin off the bench. 7-4 coming in.
