Dale Burns' eighteenth Vikings team leaned on an inside trio of 6-4 senior Brent Messer (11.6 points, 8.5 rebounds), 6-3 senior Will Dodd (10.3) and 6-5 senior Scott Smith (7.2), with 6-4 junior point guard Kevin Springs (12.0) and 6-1 senior David Coffey outside. Messer, a tight end drawing Division I-AA interest, had 19 points and 13 rebounds in the last game before Christmas. All three losses came on the road, to Science Hill, Dobyns-Bennett and Juneau-Douglas, and the Vikings won at Colony in Anchorage, but lost point guard Brad Burns to mononucleosis. 7-3 coming in.
