Ranked third in Upper East Tennessee, Dickie Warren's Cougars paired balanced scoring with an aggressive, physical style, and most of their games had been cakewalks, though Warren, past 700 career wins, felt they were far from their potential. Point guard Mark Manno (5-11, sr.) averaged 11.4 and was a three-point threat, David Smith (6-6, jr.) 11.1 and Kevin Horne (6-0, sr.) about 11, with Dennis DeVinney (6-5, jr.) and Kevin Wampler (6-1, sr.) starting. Off the bench came three-point ace Eric Harper (5-10, sr.), Harold Horne (6-3, sr.) and Dallas Rinehart (6-2, jr.). 11-1 coming in.
