Woody Deans' Patriots had lost only twice in two years, once in a slowdown against Hayfield in the first round of the VHSL Group AAA tournament. They routed Franklin County 105-53, Heritage 84-62 and Oak Hill Academy 98-67 before escaping E.C. Glass 74-68. 6-6 George Lynch, one of the nation's best juniors, averaged 20 points, and senior guards Curtis Blair (6-2) and Percy Covington (6-1) had signed with Richmond and VMI. Center Russell Turner (6-6, sr.) and forward Melvin Davis (6-4, sr.) started, with enforcer Bernard Basham (6-6, sr.) off the bench. 4-0 coming in.
