Buck Van Huss, the winningest active high school coach in America at 957-287 over 36 years, brought a team ranked No. 2 in Upper East Tennessee despite several new faces; one of its two losses was to top-ranked Science Hill. 6-1 senior Ken Bonifay, little used as a reserve the year before, averaged 15.5 points, lone returning starter Mickey Seaver, a long-range shooter, 15.7, 6-4 junior Ricky Webster, a transfer from Knoxville Carter, 12.7, and 6-4 junior Sherman Hoard 10.0. A zone man, Van Huss had gone more to man-to-man to take away the three. 9-2 coming in.
