Ranked fourth in Northeast Tennessee, John McCrary's Golden Raiders returned nearly intact and were expected to contend near the top of the Big 10. 6-6 post Jeff Marshall, tough inside and able to step out, averaged 20.3 points, with 6-6 Brian Boggs adding 12.5. Quicker than in recent years, North's question was at guard, where 5-11 senior Brian Hagood was the steadiest at 12.8 points. Clay Minton (5-9) and Shannon Smith (6-4, 9.5 points) completed the lineup. 7-3 coming in.
