Usually among the best in their conference, John McCrary's Golden Raiders, former Arby's Classic champions and Big 10 runners-up the year before, had struggled early after losing much of their offense to graduation. Brian Smith (6-3, sr.), strong inside with an outside game too, led at 16.5 points. Tony Bowen (5-9, jr.) and Shawn Falin (6-1, jr.), both three-point shooters, David Hutchins (5-10, jr.) and David Lawson (6-5, jr.) were expected to start, with Jason Greer (6-1, jr.) and Ricky Johnson (5-9, sr.) the top reserves. 5-7 coming in.
