John McCrary's 16th Sullivan North team, new to the Class 2A Appalachian Conference, had not yet won, losing double-figure leads in three of its last four games, with several players late from a football team that reached the Class AA state semifinals. 6-1 senior guard Wesley Crowe, one of the old Big 10's best, averaged 20 points; 6-4 senior forward Martin Bagwell added 12.0 and ten rebounds, and 6-3 junior Josh Brickey 10.1. Neither North nor McCrary had ever started this slowly. 0-10 coming in.
