The 1985 Arby's Classic champions were struggling after three of their more experienced players left the team a couple of weeks earlier, and John McCrary's Golden Raiders had beaten only Sullivan East and Class AA Hampton. Their lone returning starter was 6-6 sophomore post Jeff Marshall, one of the Big 10's top scorers at 16.1 points and the only freshman ever to start at North the season before. Sophomore Brian Boggs (6-5, 11 points) and 6-1 senior Chad Greer also started, with 5-6 senior Clay Minton and 6-3 junior Robbie McClellan playing too. 2-9 coming in.
