George Pitts' Hilltoppers were the overwhelming pick to win the Big 10 and already looked like one of the best clubs in the state; their closest game had been an 11-point win over Sullivan South. Quick and balanced, they played 11 regularly. Orville Whittington, a 6-3 senior and one of the league's toughest players, led in scoring (14.9) and rebounding (9). Sophomore guard Jamie Jones (5-11) scored 13.8, many from three-point range, and junior Derrick Bristol (6-3) 12.6. Not big, but full of athletes. 10-0 coming in.
