Last year's Region I and sub-state champions lost all five starters, but George Pitts built a competitive team on the Hilltoppers' usual aggressive man-to-man defense and balanced scoring, playing 10 to 12 players a game. Senior Todd Starke (6-4) led at 13.8 points and 6-3 senior Frank Stokes added 11.9, with 6-8 senior Terry Lewis, 6-3 sophomore Derrick Bristol and 5-10 freshman Jamie Jones also starting. Oak Ridge, which had put Science Hill out of the state tournament the year before, beat the Hilltoppers 62-49 during the season. 7-5 coming in.
