First-year coach Mike Williams, who had built winners at Unicoi County and Morristown East, had perhaps the least talent in the field but a team that could stay with anybody. Joel Conkin, the lone returning starter, broke his hand in practice the week before, and the Rebels, then 5-5, lost their next two. Eric Beckerink (5-9, jr.) and David Bowery (5-11, jr.) started at guard, Randy Duncan (6-3, sr.) at small forward and Todd McKee (6-0, sr.) and Sam Hale (6-1, jr.) inside, all scoring eight to 12, Hale 17 over the last three games. 5-7 coming in.
