Robert High's Panthers had gone 34-3 and reached the state 3-A semifinals the season before, then lost 6-8 C.J. Black to the University of Tennessee. High, with state titles in 1987 and 1992 and two fifth-place Arby's finishes, played 3-2 and matchup zones that hawked the passing lanes. Junior point guard Harris Walker (17 points), who had broken both bones in his right forearm at the Arby's a year earlier, and 6-5 senior Johnny Goodman (18) carried the team, with forward Willie Chestnutt and post Corey Tress developing. 9-2 coming in.
