Ranked first among Georgia's Class AAAA schools and fresh from winning the Cobb Holiday Classic, Wheeler had been third here the year before and was a favorite. Guard D.A. Layne, signed with Georgia, had led that tournament in scoring at 26 a game; around him were 6-4 forward Antwuan Dixon, 6-6 center Matt Harrison, and guards Ryan Wheeler and Amir Abdur-Rahim, the brother of Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Doug Lipscomb's teams had lost three games in three years. 8-0 coming in.
