Maurice Payne brought a senior ballclub, several of them key members of the team that won the Arby's Classic in 1986. Six-foot senior guard Kenny Phelps, who led that title run, averaged 20.5 points, and 6-3 senior center Terry Samuels added 10.8 points and 6.8 rebounds. Payne had played at least 11 in each of the Bulldogs' first four games, and their only loss was 64-59 at home to Louisville Ballard, the top-ranked team in Kentucky.
