Frank Scott's Lancers lost four starters from back-to-back Group AA state tournament teams but kept 6-8, 240-pound senior center Odell Hodge, an Old Dominion signee who as a sophomore tied Ralph Sampson's state tournament record of 26 rebounds in a game. Ron Wilson (6-4, sr.) and Lonzy Robertson (6-1, jr.) started at forward, with juniors Ronnie Jackson and Chauncey Strange at guard. Scott, son of NASCAR driver Wendell Scott, had coached ETSU's Jason Niblett and Emory & Henry All-American Stan Eggleston. 4-0 coming in.
