After reaching the Region I finals, the Patriots lost four starters and head coach Marty Street, who moved on to the college ranks. Dennis Roach, with 590 wins as the boys' coach at Rutledge and the girls' coach at Jefferson County, took over. Two first-rate starters carried the team: 6-7 senior post Jarvis Stacy, recruited by Memphis State, ETSU and Alabama-Birmingham, at 20.5 points on 50 percent shooting, and 6-2 junior wing Willie Roach at 22.6 points on 62 percent. Jim Franklin, point guard Shawn Floyd and Mike Peck filled out the lineup. 6-3 coming in.
