Mark Walton, in his 24th year and twice coach of Canada's top-ranked team, brought the Gaels from Hamilton, Ontario, after a 28-7 conference championship season. Junior guards Val Clarke (6-0, 17.5 points) and Mark Maga (6-4, 16.0) led a deep team that had already reached tournament finals in Pennsylvania and New York, though Maga and Taylor were nursing hand and wrist injuries and six players had missed the start of the season for football. Walton saw his best team two years off. 8-4 coming in.
