In his first season, Phil Mahin called his young Bears a rebuilding team of blue-collar workers. Two starters returned: 6-1 senior swingman Carlos Hopper (12 points) and junior guard Tony Goatley (10), who had missed a game with illness. Senior guard Darryl Woods and sophomore forward Dewayne Rogers were expected to start, with junior Dionde Calloway or senior John Harris as the fifth starter, and sophomore Jay Kiefer and senior James Gawthrop were sure of minutes. 0-3 coming in.
