Contest champions
Virginia's defending Group AAA state champions, Ron Jenkins' Marlins returned all five starters and two top reserves and ranked second in the state behind Oak Hill Academy until a loss to Cradock with leading scorer and rebounder Ronell Williams (6-5 junior, 240 pounds) out with the flu. Center Mario Mullins (6-6 senior), drawing looks from Maryland, VCU and Richmond, joined Williams inside on a team that liked to run and swarm on defense. A postponement left Bayside nearly two weeks without a game. 1-1 coming in.
