Regional champions the year before, Don Ledbetter's Bobcats went 8-0 in the season's first month. Their big gun was 6-7 sophomore Mike Blassingame, already drawing mail from all over the country, at 21 points and 13 rebounds, with 23 rebounds in his last game. Ledbetter, in his ninth year, counted most on two returning 5-11 guards, Chris Parahm (13 points the year before) and Amon Martin. Sophomore Marlon Pruitt (6-1) and 6-5 junior Al Gaines, at 15 points and 12 rebounds despite September surgery, completed the lineup. 8-0 coming in.
