Conference and district champions at 18-8 the season before, Barry Johnson's Cougars from Burnsville, N.C., came for a single game, the consolation exhibition on championship day. Expectations had only risen, and Jamie Pate, a 6-9, 250-pound force in the paint, looked strong enough to carry them. Weldon Weatherman (6-3) and Kevin Whitson (6-1) also worked along the baseline. 4-2 coming in.
